Some of our favorite things...

It's fun to see what people say about "some of their favorite things" on Sanibel and Captiva Islands, and I want to tell you the rest of the results from my casual survey from my clients and friends. I mentioned before that the winner of the "favorite beach" location was beach access number 7 on West Gulf Drive. I think we all have our favorite beach location, but I have to agree that access 7 does take you to some spectacular shelling after a strong westerly wind. On the other hand, anyplace you can stick your umbrella into the sand is a super place to spend the day!

If you're wondering what the poll revealed as the favorite restaurant, Sweet Melissa's, located at 1625 Periwinkle Way, was the winner!

Runners-up were Il Cielo, Il Tesoro, Sanibel Café, Timbers, Lazy Flamingo and Rosies all receiving multiple votes. With so many great restaurants on Sanibel & Captiva Islands, it's hard to pick a favorite!

Biking on Sanibel has always been a major reason some people love our islands. When I asked what bike route was the favorite, it's hard to argue with the winner being all the trails in the Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge. You can spend your entire vacation exploring our favorite sanctuary. We had a tie for second best bike trail, the Sanibel Pond Apple Trail and the trail near the Over Easy Cafe on Tarpon Bay Road. With over 20 miles of biking/walking trails on Sanibel, it's a fun way to spend some time and get some exercise.

Always a winner!

Living on Sanibel Island we sometimes forget to notice how special our islands are to the outside world. We are always winning awards or being named as #1 in beaches, fishing, shelling, vacations, and so on. Over the years we have been mentioned in articles all over the world. Of course it doesn't seem like news to those of us who live here... we know how wonderful Sanibel Island and Captiva Island are!

Our Chamber of Commerce recently published a list of a few awards our Islands have received. I'll post a few of them at the end of this blog.

I recently put together an online survey to see what my friends and clients would pick for their favorite island place.

When I asked what beach is a favorite, it seems the beach at "Access 7" located on West Gulf Drive is the favorite choice! Parking is restricted and limited, but easy to access by bike.

Another favorite (came in as a strong second) is Bowmans Beach off Sanibel-Captiva Drive. I have a tough time picking my favorite beach. Some days I think Blind Pass beach is the best, but during our busy winter season I think I like the limited access beaches off West Gulf Drive. It's a tough choice when you have over 20 miles of beach to chose from.

In my survey I also asked for favorite bike ride, and favorite island restaurant. I'll post the results of those in upcoming blogs. Sanibel Island and Captiva Island always have something to offer, and many times we get chosen as "best" in a survey. Not bad for a tiny area located in Southwest Florida!

As for local news and current things to do on the island, you can always pull up the calendar at our Chamber of Commerce website. From education, to tennis, to our 10th annual "Pirate Fest," there is always something fun to do!

While on the islands you might as well put me to work looking for your perfect place in paradise! This is a great time to start your Sanibel real estate search. Just let me know your criteria and I can gather a list of properties that fit your needs. Whether a condo, home, or homesite, I know my islands and I can help you find just what you want. A total "Don't Miss It" while on Sanibel Island is the Sanibel Island Farmers Market
It is gem in the truest sense.  Aside from having local produce at good prices, the Farmers Market also has vendors that can provide you with ingredients for meals for the week.  Whether that is bread, cheese, pasta, sauces, fish or pastries, you can find a variety of yummy locally grown or produced products.
My husband and I got there late yesterday - it runs from 8am to 1pm on Sundays, November thru April, and we got the additional bonus of getting discounted prices on the produce.  The vendors did not want to go home with it so better to sell it at a discount.
Likely the best part of the Market is the community building.  Not that Sanibel lacks for a sense of community but this simple weekly event pulls everyone out.  There hasn't been a Sunday when we haven't run into several friends here.  The relaxed time allows for catching up and the ability to bring along 4 legged friends on leashes ads to the community flavor (I do believe we are the dog capital of SW Florida as well as being #1 on Frommers list).
Do stop by and check it out for yourself.  It is held behind City Hall on Dunlop Road.  I hope to see you there soon!
Thanks! And as always contact me for the latest Sanibel Island real estate information!

Greetings:

Below is the link for the State of Florida site devoted to the response to the spill in the Gulf of Mexico.  The site has projected trajectories for the spill area and provides updates on the containment and clean-up efforts.  Also - for Sanibel Island related updates please view www.mysanibel.com

As of today, Sanibel Island and Captiva Island are not in harms way.  The City of Sanibel is keeping a close eye on the situation and has developed response efforts in the event they are necessary.

Think of Sanibel Island and you think FISHING - at least many do.  For those Sanibel Island lovers, please be advised that the City of Sanibel will be doing some repairs to the pier from 9/21 - 10/5.  It is important to keep this treasure in good form.  The official notice from the City of Sanibel is below.

"On Monday, September 21, 2009 the City of Sanibel will begin repair work to the City Fishing Pier and construction will continue through October 5, 2009.  The City Fishing Pier will not be available for use during this construction project.  We apologize for any inconvenience you may experience while this important public improvement project is completed."

The project involves the removal and replacement of wood decking, hand rails, and other miscellaneous items.  The City of Sanibel has contracted with Bridge Masters Construction, LLC to perform this work.  The Lee County Tourist Development Council (TDC) is providing funding for this project.

Anyone with questions regarding the City Fishing Pier Repair Project is invited to contact the City of Sanibel Public Works Department at (239) 472-6397. You can also check the Sanibel Government Website for more information.
