Native vs. Non-Native Sanibel Island & Captiva Island Vegetation
I want to tell you about this great new website I found! Have you ever wanted a fast and easy way to determine which island plants are native and which are not? If you are building on the island, or are currently a home owner, this is a fun way to lean about our local plant life. As you probably know, Sanibel Island has strict codes as far as removing "exotic vegetation," and if you plan to build on the island you need to be aware of what you need to remove and replace.

This website allows you to plug in your zip code and it will pull up a list of local plants, along with their common name and its scientific name. I mean how many of us have wondered what plant "Heterotheca subaxillaris" is? Or maybe most of us will just stick with the common name (Camphorweed). Click the links below for the full list of Sanibel Island and Captiva Island plants. Check out these sites for Sanibel Island and Captiva Island.

The Sanibel website "MySanibel.com" has lots of information along with contact numbers for your questions. Of course you can also give me a call at 239-691-4915 and I can point you in the right direction to find answers to your questions. I've built a home on Sanibel Island, as well as being a Realtor on the island, so I do have some expertise on this subject.
You can also find more on the "Vegetation Information" page of the Sanibel government website. You can find lots of information about native vs. non-native vegetation, and our city building department is a friendly place that will work with Island builders to help guide your construction project to a successful end.
